Cast
Dysseus: A typical fifth-grade boy. Lives with his grandmother while his parents continue medical outreach program in Thailand. Likes soccer, basketball, and video games. Favorite group: JaZ. Favorite reading: Slam and ESPN magazine.
Justine: Also a typical fifth grader, she lives next door to Dysseus. Spent the summer at away camp for first time, made friends all over the country. Likes to have friends over while she Instant Messages; listens to music, watches TV and talks on the phone. Favorite TV show: The Simpsons, Dawson's Creek. Reads: Teen People.
Grandma: Has 137 grandchildren. She's a spry 74 who recently got a master's degree in art history. She likes to kayak on the Potomac River, plays bridge, poker and spades, likes hand dancing and big band music. Spent last summer in Holland researching Dutch Art of the 1600's.' "Live by the Golden Rule, go to church, cook an apple pie every now and then and everything'll be alright."
Father: Justine's dad. Works in the accounting department of the water company. Met and married Justine's mother in college. Loves his family, but secretly wants a son. Is a big fan of the Steelers and is addicted to Talk Radio, especially ESPN.
Reggie: The class clown, he's also a good and loyal friend, someone you can count on if times get tough. Notable life event: meeting Charles Barkley at the mall and getting his autograph on his tee shirt. Likes MAD magazine, whoopie cushions, food in all shapes and sizes (particularly vanilla ice cream), and video games. Favorite team: Philadelphia 76'ers. Favorite book: Goosebumps.
Angel: Lives in a trailer with Mom, little sister and two dogs that are probably pom a poos. Wants to own her own beauty parlor when she grows up. Has had to move three times and wants to help her mom buy a house. Likes Rap and some country music, acts tough, but is afraid of insects, dogs, clowns, trains, the ocean, and anyone who might make fun of her.
Bus Driver: This is his 12th and last year driving a bus. Used to like kids. Has been going to computer school part time for the last five years to be a network engineer. Likes fishing, football, and mowing his lawn. Reads PC World, Field & Stream, and People magazine when no one's looking.
Squeaky: The class tough guy. Large for his age. Has a reading disability that went undiagnosed until fourth grade. Wants a pit bull, but local laws prevent him. Can't wait 'til he's 17 and can join the Marines. Used to sing in the church choir, has beautiful voice, but doesn't want anyone to know. Heroes: Allen Iverson, Kobe Bryant. Favorite ride: Black Mercedes 560 SL.
Mrs. Burnett: Just celebrated her 24th year teaching. Can't imagine doing anything else or finding anything else as rewarding. With her husband and two children, took a ten-day boat trip on the Amazon River. Amazed her students with slides of snakes and crocodiles she encountered. Last book read: Howard Gardner's "Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences". Favorite recording artists: Eva Cassidy and Anita Baker.
Crystal: A fifth-grade student who's been a peer mediator for the last two years. Has a yellow belt in Karate, roller blades everywhere and loves to shop. Favorite band: JayLo and TLC.
